“Japanese Design Today 100” Exhibition

The Japan Foundation and the Consulate General of Japan in Guangzhou join up to organize the exhibition “Japanese Design Today 100”, which would be opened in C4 Space, Redtory, December,10th 2016.
It was curated by KASHIWAGI, Hiroshi, the famous design critic, FUKAGAWA, Masafumi, a curator, HAGIWARA, Shu, the stationer of TSUKUSHI and design director, and KAWAKAMI, Noriko, the associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. Not only to display the foremost designs and the newest trend in Japan, this exhibition aims to showcase the modern Japanese culture, which have a great effect on designs in China and western countries. It improves the development of thoughts, exchange of ideas and technique and so on.
Focusing mainly on the designs born after the year 2010, 100 exquisite Japanese products were chosen to be showcased around the world, such as some works from well-known designers, Issey Miyake and Nakamura Yoshifumi, so on and so forth.As the prelude of modern design, the 11 works focused on the classic modern design. They explore the root of Japanese design ideas and pay honor to masters. The other 89 works could be divided into 9 kinds: furniture and house-ware, tableware and cookware, apparel and accessories, children, stationery, hobbies, health care, disaster relief and transportation. All of those represent the essence of Japanese designs of daily life and reflect directly people’s hobbies and lifestyle.
For this exhibition, there are three guests invited to hold lectures in Redtory, they are Professor Zhang Fuye from the school of art of Tsinghua University, Noriko Kawakami, the associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, Wang Shouzhi, the famous scholar of history of design. Zhao Jian,Chinese scholar in Japan,There would be in-depth discussions about the ethos of eastern aesthetics, the supreme element of Japanese design and the development of design and so on.
Consul General of Consulate General of Japan in Guangzhou, Mr. Saito Norio, Culture Consul Mrs. Inokuchi Natsuko, Art Director Ms. Huang Lishi of the Redtory Culture and Art Orgainzation, Professor Zhang Fuye of the Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University, vice director of Tokyo 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT as well as one of the curators of this exhibition Kawakami Noriko participated in the opening ceremony.
Leaders from multiple international organizations presented in the ceremony to give their congratulations, including Bernard . Nguyen, the consul of The Canadian Consulate General in Guangzhou, Ms.Eynan Cohen, the culture consul of the Israeli Consulate General in Guangzhou, Beat Schmid, the deputy consul general of the Swiss Consulate General in Guangzhou, Dirk Lechelt, deputy director of the German Consulate General in Guangzhou, culture attach Lydia Reichenberger and Mrs. Chen Yichun.

Consul General of Consulate General of Japan in Guangzhou, Mr. Saito Norio gave a speech on the opening ceremony, hoping that this exhibition can stimulate the communication between Chinese and Western design and inspire each other in aspects such as though development, innovation communication and technology interaction. “Through this exhibiton, we can observe how design works in our society, reexamine things we have been taking granted for and there are things waiting to be discovered again.” Said art director of the Redtory Culture and Art Organization Ms. Huang Lishi.

About the speaker: Kawakami Noriko: Journalist. The associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. She used to work in the editorial board of magazine AXIS, which is about design. From 1944 to 1996, she took part in the Japan- Italy cooperation as the editorial director with Domus Academy. From 2007, she became the associate director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. She was famous for Realizing Design, which was published by TOTO, and co-authored the book Looking Out at the World from the Inside with Satou Dai, which was published by Nikkei Business Publications,Inc. She also edited the book Tendo Mokko, which was published by Japanese Fine Arts Publishing House and so on.
